What happens when you can’t remember your past? What happens when all you remember about yourself is being in a padded room for years, nobody visiting you minus one single person. What happens to a person when they’re forced to be medicated and sedated twenty-four, seven? Well, it’s not very fun. One person who knows all about that is the woman who simply goes by The Ringmistress. Today, she was sitting in the apartment that her and Ringmaster rented and lived in together. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was a place for her that wasn’t a padded wall with a straight jacket on all the time. She was sitting out in the balcony, giggling away as she looked out and had a slingshot. She had her little BBs and was aiming at birds that would land on the railing and missing each and every one of them despite her trying to actually hit them. She heard the apartment door open and she immediately turned her head and fired a shot with the slingshot that hit the man that came into apartment right in the chest.
“Ouch! What was that for,” the man asked as he laughed and walked out onto the balcony to join the woman. She smiled, looking up at him as she stood up and wrapped in a hug.
“Hugo! I’m glad you’re back back! I was having fun fun trying to shoot birdies,” She laughed as she released the hug and sat herself back down on the chair she was in.
Hugo, or as people knew him better, Ringmaster just laughed and shook his head. He leaned out over the balcony and looked out at the trees that surrounded their apartment complex. “Do you remember the first day I came to see you in that hell hole,” he asked her as he looked back to see Ringmistress swing her legs back and forth laughing a little bit.
“Of course course I do! How could I ever forget the day I met you you,” She exclaimed as she bounced up out of the chair and ran over to him and wrapped her arms around him and placed her chin on his shoulder.
As the two stood there, they began to talk about the day he first came to visit her in the mental hospital all those years ago. The scene turned into the interior of a mental hospital. We saw a younger version of The Ringmaster, wearing a pair of blue jeans and black t-shirt as he walked into the building. He walked up to the receptionist and she looked up at him. She was just a normal, plain looking woman, brunette hair that went down to her shoulders and her blue scrubs on.
“Can I help you, sir,” she asked as she prepared the paperwork that was going to be needed if there was a possible visitation.
“I’m here to see Katherine Foster,” he said as he pulled out his ID. He was told about the procedures that happened her to have visitations with one of the patients. He handed the ID over and the receptionist looked at it and handed him over the forms and he began to read them over and sign each piece of paper that he needed. After around five minutes or so, he handed the clipboard with the forms back over and took his ID and put it back in his wallet. And attending came over and Hugo followed him. They went into an elevator and up a couple of floors. He was then led down a hallway to a room at the end on the left. The attending opened up the door and let Hugo inside.
Inside was two chairs, the walls were padded and in the far, right hand corner, sat a young girl, probably around eighteen or nineteen years old. She just sat there, in a catatonic like state as she looked up and saw Hugo come into the room. A little smile came across her face as she saw the familiar face. She got up and she walked over towards Hugo and just leaned right into him. He wrapped his arms around the woman, and held her close. Her expression really didn’t change, but Hugo rubbed her back a little before he let go of her and took a seat in one of the chairs. She noticed this and she did the same thing.
“Br...brother…” she whispered as she sat there looking him in the eyes. Her expression was still blank though, almost like she was fully sedated into this state.
He nodded his head as he looked at her just giving a smile at the recognition. You could see on his face that it was hard to see his sister in this kind of state. “Yes, Kat, it’s your brother. I know what you did to mom and dad wasn’t fully your fault. I don’t blame you for it. I know you aren’t mentally well and there’s nothing I can do to change that part,” he said as tears were beginning to form in his eyes, “I know mom and dad, especially dad wasn’t exactly great to you. They caused all of this to happen to you and then didn’t know how to properly help you.”
He stood up, the tears in his eyes were quite evident now as he started to talk about his sister and a little bit of the past. He walked in silence for a few minutes as he just paced around the room before finally sitting back down. The entire he did this, Katherine didn’t say a word, she just watched him, never letting him out of her sight. He finally sat back down though, looking right at his sister once again and let out a loud sigh.
“I know you don’t remember what you did to mom and dad. You weren’t yourself when you killed them, everyone knows that. That’s why you’re here. But this, this isn’t you. This state, being sedated, it just isn’t you at all,” he said as he started to get back up. He walked over to Katherine and got down on one knee beside and grabbed her hand and held it tight, “I promise you, I’m going to bring all of your dreams come true. One day I’m going to get you out of here and we’re going to be together like we always promised each other. We’re going to have our very own circus one day, just me and you. It’s just going to take a little bit of time.”
As he said this, the attending came back into the room with Kat’s meal. He undid the straight jacket for right now so she was able to eat and Hugo took that as the que that it was time for him to leave for today.
“I promise I’ll get you out one day, Kat,” Hugo said as gave Kat one finaly hug and with her arms free, she wrapped her arms loosely around him and he kissed her on the cheek. He walked out the door and took one final look back as Kat took the tray from the attending and began to eat her lunch.
After that, it cuts back to Hugo and Katherine out on the balcony of their apartment with Katherine still holding onto her brother and smiling.
“I never never forgot that day. I knew you would hold hold your promise to me,” she said with a smile and she kissed him on the cheek before sitting back down in her chair and grabbing her slingshot, “But I don’t want want to ever think about those times again. I want want to shoot birdies again.”
Hugo just laughed as he turned around and away from the balcony to see Katherine take her slingshot and take aim, sticking out her tongue like she thought that would help as she released the BB and the bird sitting in the branch of the tree fell from its perch causing Katherine to laugh and squeal with joy at the sight. Hugo though, all he could do is shake his head and walk into the apartment.
“Nobody will ever be able to hurt you again, sister. We have our circus now like I promised you and we will all do anything for you.”
