She lost. Again. It was almost funny, really. Her career in two different companies was showing polar opposites. When wrestling inside the Sanatorium, Angel Kusanagi had quickly proven she was a dominant force. The woman not to be messed with. Four victories. Zero losses. One of them had been a triple threat match. Another had been against a man that could have easily broken her in half if he had the sense in his head to do so. Then there was her tenure in the New Frontier. Angel felt like she couldn’t score a goddamn win to save her goddamn life there. She’d been the one to step forward and offer to defend her friend, Adrianna’s honor when she was needlessly attacked by Cherry Addams. But now, after over a month of tension boiling up between her and the hot headed American, Angel came back to America off a hot victory against Chris Matthews in the Shogun Tournament to settle things with Cherry. The result? That crazy girl opened Angel’s head like a melon and reminded her that she wasn’t invincible. Truth be told, the defeat at the hands of Cherry Addams brought her back down to Earth. What was so different here compared to the Sanatorium? Angel was beginning to feel like a goddess there. Not in the ethereal sense. More so in the ‘nobody can fucking stop me’ sense. Angel loved her reputation she was feeling build up there, but she wanted success in both places. She wanted wins and championships. No. She needed wins and championships!
Angel reached over and grabbed her phone off of the nightstand in the hotel room as she laid in the bed. The cold air from the air conditioner felt nice on her bare, sweat kissed body. Angel opened her phone and stared silently at the background photo of herself and her twin sister, Tsukiko. It was an old one. They were eighteen in it and almost impossible to tell apart except Tsukiko had longer hair. Angel stared at the picture as a silent reminder. She needed wins. She needed titles. She needed money. Sighing, she sat up and grabbed her pack of cigarettes and zippo off of the nightstand. Angel looked over her shoulder at the body in bed with her. Her tag team partner, Shelley Silver, lay passed out and oblivious to the world around her. The American woman laid there as bare as Angel was, under the sheets, with her back to her. A small smile formed on Angel’s lips as she reached out and stroked Shelley’s back with the backs of her fingers. The woman let out a soft ‘mmmh’ and shifted in place. Angel admired the sight for a moment before getting up and walking out onto the back balcony. She threw on a silk robe on the way but didn’t bother tying it as she stuck a cigarette in between her lips and lit the end with her zippo. She stared at the dragon layered over a cherry blossom design and thought of Tsukiko again. The lighter was a gift from her for their nineteenth birthday. Angel squeezed the lighter in her hand before setting it and the pack down on the outside table. She leaned back in her chair, enjoying the cool taste of menthol as she opened up her notes on her next opponent for the Shogun Tournament.
‘Starlight.’ Angel said the name in her head as she looked at the woman’s picture she’d saved after learning that she was next on her list of opponents for the Sanatorium Block. She stared coldly at the picture. Oddly enough, Angel realized she and Starlight had something very much in common. They were both forces to be reckoned with inside the Sanatorium but hadn’t been faring so well in a more traditional wrestling environment like the New Frontier. ‘Maybe we’re more alike than it seems.’ Angel said to herself. ‘Perhaps we don’t belong among the normal people. Maybe we belong in cages like animals. Perhaps we are animals.’
Angel was shaken from her thoughts when her phone buzzed in her hand. It was a text message from her mother. Angel realized the woman was probably up by now. She opened up her text message app to read the message.
Yukiko! Are you awake?
Angel typed back a reply message.
Yes. I just finished the show here in America.
The police were just at our apartment.
Angel felt a knot in her stomach. The police? What did they want at her family’s place? Angel got the answer to her question before she could start to text back. She didn’t like it one bit.
Did you beat up some teenagers while you were here?
Angel froze as she stared at the screen. Was her mother talking about the boys that Yujiro was with? Angel paused for a moment to think. Finally, she texted back.
Define ‘beat up.’
Yukiko! This is no time for jokes!
Angel couldn’t help but smirk. She could hear her mother’s stern voice in her head while reading the words. She thought seriously then. As she did, her mother sent another message.
The police said that some teenagers reported they were attacked by a woman. They said they were told that she was Yujiro’s sister. They questioned us. What did you do?
Angel closed her eyes and half-palmed her face with the hand she held her cigarette in. ‘Goddamn it.’ She cursed inwardly before texting back.
Did they talk to Yujiro?
Yes. He told them that you only stopped them from beating him up. The police claim they were told that you attacked the boys and savagely beat them. They said that you were with men that might be Yakuza! What happened?!
Angel felt her annoyance flare and she took a long drag off of her cigarette. ‘Those goddamn little shits!’ Angel texted.
All I did was stand up for Yujiro. The little punks attacked me so I had to defend myself. I didn’t go overboard. Maybe I should have.
She paused then added,
Kidding.
That’s what Yujiro told them. Why would they say that you were with the Yakuza?
Some of Yamamoto’s men showed up. I guess they heard the commotion and got curious. It is their turf.
Oh no. This is bad Yukiko. Our family does not need this.
I will handle it Mom. I am flying back to Japan in two days. I will speak to the police and give them a statement. It is going to be fine. I promise.
Forgive me. I am just worried. About you. About everything.
Don’t be. I need to go. I will see you in a few days. I love you.
I love you too.
Give dad and Yujiro hugs for me.
I will.
Angel closed out of the app and sighed, dragging on her cigarette again. This was the last thing neither she nor her family needed. With any luck, it would only take a stop at the police department in Osaka for a statement to clear things up. Angel was snapped out of her thoughts by a hand gently caressing her shoulder. She looked up and over to see that Shelley had awakened and was smirking down at her.
“Hey you.” Shelley said in Japanese, leaning out of the doorway. The gentle breeze blowing through her long, brown hair. She was as breathtaking as always. Almost anyone would think so. But not everyone got her the way Angel did. It made the Japanese woman smile and she offered her cigarette up to her friend, tag partner and frequent lover.
“Hey beautiful.” Angel replied back in her native tongue as Shelley accepted the cigarette and took a drag off of it before handing it back.
“Everything good?” Shelley asked, running her hand over Angel’s bare shoulder and collarbone. She stepped out onto the balcony, into the night with her, clearly not caring that she wasn’t covered. It wasn’t like anybody was going to see them on the upper floor in so little light.
Angel nodded, sighing. “Fine. Might have to talk to the police when I go back to Japan.” Angel stuck her cigarette back in between her lips, talking over it. “Remember those punks I told you about that my brother was hanging with?”
“They ratted on you….” Shelley groaned in annoyance. “Goddamn little shits.”
Angel chuckled. “That’s what I said. I’m just going to give a statement when I get back. Shouldn’t be any trouble. Cops hate street thugs in my country and I have no prior record.”
“Good.” Shelley said, brushing her fingers up under Angel’s chin. “Everything else okay?”
Angel raised her eyebrows, thoughtfully as she brought back up the picture of Starlight and showed it to Shelley. “I’ve got this one next for the Shogun Tournament. Anything you can feed me on her? I know you tangled with her before.”
“Her?” Shelley smirked in amusement. “You have to remember, she calls herself a Queen Slayer. I beat her. Kimi beat her. We don’t call ourselves Queens, do we?”
Angel chuckled and snuffed out her cigarette in the ashtray. “Jazz-meen Matthewssu calls herself a Queen and she didn’t get slain.” Angel stood up from her chair, turning to face Shelley with an amused, confident smirk on her face.
“Exactly. Starlight walked into the ring, thinking she would have her way with me and easily win my strap. What happened was I didn't even break a sweat.” Shelley said with raised eyebrows and a sly grin. “You’ve got this, gorgeous. Don’t worry about a thing.”
“Worried? What would I have to be worried about?” Angel made a playful expression, acting like she was offended as she sauntered up to her tag team partner for NFW. Before Shelley could get a word out, Angel wrapped her arms around the woman’s neck and kissed her slow and deep. She felt a pleasant rush through her body as Shelley’s wrapped her arms around her waist, underneath her open robe.
Shelley broke the kiss with a grin, lightly sucking on Angel’s bottom lip as she pulled back. “Never said you had to be, silly. But if you had any worries, so to speak, I could help you forget about them.”
Angel loved that playful grin Shelley tended to give her when the mood was right. She stepped in more, pressing herself against the woman more. Her eyes briefly shifted towards their hotel bed and back to Shelley as a seductive smirk played across her lips. “Let’s pretend, just for another hour or two, that I am.”
Chuckling, Shelley reached down and lifted Angel up and the two fell back onto the bed, sharing another kiss. If Angel did have anything to worry about - be it the police or facing Starlight in the Shogun Tournament - she wasn’t going to worry about them right this second….
