It had been two weeks to the day since the events that had rocked the very foundation those within Hell stood on.
Aerynn Maguire and her husband were dead. Killed by the twisted leader of the group that had assaulted Maiko Adachi.
Joshua Mcbride was dead. Killed by the right hand of Lord Apollyon himself,. Anthony Crawford.
But in all of that darkness and dread came a single ray of light. A single moment of hope in the sorrow. Shay Kenyon, Lena Theras and the twin daughters of Shay and Michael Rivers had used the time Joshua had bought them and escaped the huge drag-net put out by Valdemar.
The pair had fled LA in the van brought with the Demons and hadn’t stopped the entire way north. They drove for a little over ten hours before slipping into a rest stop on the Oregon border. Shay broke down into tears when she saw the yellow camaro with the raven haired woman leaning on the fender.
Ashley Kenyon waited until her cousin had handed the girls to Lena before pulling her into a fierce hug. With everything that had happened Ashley couldn’t stop herself from thinking the worst. That Anthony and Valdemar would find a way to intercept the van.
The bartender, released from the bodybag by Shay on the road between LA and Dorris was told in so many words to forget that he had ever been here and disappear.
Do not return to LA.
Do not go home.
Do not go back to work.
Shay and Lena were then loaded into another van and Ashley torched the one they had been traveling in. She knew Valdemar would be tracking it. This is as close as they would get to Hell.
Neither Shay nor Lena were allowed to see the route that was taken but when they arrived it wasn’t hard for the pair to get some bearings on where they were, just by how long they had been in the car.
That night Lucier had made the mistake of greeting the pair himself and found himself on the business end of Ashley’s 9MM glock when it was snatched off her thigh by the enraged blonde and pointed point blank into the bridge of his nose and he was told in so many words that he wasn’t to speak to her. He wasn’t to speak to her wife. And he damn sure wasn’t to speak to her daughters.
Since that moment Lucifer had kept his distance from the pair, letting Ashley and Maiko tend to most of their needs but that could only continue for so long. Things were being said. Opinions made very public.
That needed to stop.
Two weeks to the day after they had arrived Lucifer made it a point to speak to them. Shay was sitting in a chair in the corner of her room with Jami on her leg and was playing Peek-A-Boo with the girl while Lena was lying on the bed with Destiny on the small of her back as her momma read.
When the door pushed opened both women looked up expecting Ashley or Maiko to be standing there but instead found themselves staring up into the cold emotionless face of Lucifer. Lena slowly moved to the side causing Destiny to slide off her back and to the soft mattress with a giggle and her hand slid under the pillow behind her.
Lucifer raised his hands apologetically when Lena found her fingers finding nothing. She had slept with a gun under her pillow and it wasn’t there anymore.
Lucifer: “I took the liberty of having Sara remove that while you two were bathing the girls this morning.”
Lena Theras: “Give. Me. My. Weapon.”
Lucifer: “After we have spoken.”
Shay Kenyon: “...Nibz….”
Lena Theras: “Give. It. Back. Now.”
There was never a raised octave in her voice, as she didn’t want to startle and upset the children but there was a clear snap in her voice that Shay knew. Lena was incensed.
Lucifer: “After.”
There was a silent stand off between Lucifer and Lena now that Shay knew neither of them was going to break.
Shay Kenyon: “Maybe we can come to an arrangement?”
Lena’s head snapped to the side and she locked her wife in a cold, angry stare.
Lena Theras: “We. Aren’t. Making. Anymore. Fucking. Deals.”
Lucifer: “You hate me for the last one.”
Lena looked back, ready to snap again, but Lucifer locked eyes with her.
Lucifer: “and you have every right.”
Maybe it was the words, maybe it was that Shay had burst into tears suddenly but Lena let out a quiet curse and moved over to kneel beside Shay’s chair and reached up touching her face with both hands whispering to her.
It took a moment to get Shay calmed down again and the whole time Lucifer stood just inside the door with his hands pressed together in front of his lap.
Waiting patiently.
Lena leaned up and pressed her lips to the tiny woman’s and then Shay passed off Jami into her arms. She knew that Lena would never do anything to risk upsetting Jami. And true to form Lena softened and looked at Lucifer.
Lena Theras: “Five minutes.”
Lucifer: “What I did that night? I wanted to punish you. You took something from me that I didn’t think could be replaced. So I wanted to take something from you.”
Shay Kenyon: “....what?”
Shay was actually shaking now, scared to death of the man standing in the doorway. Lucifer however shrugged.
Lucifer: “She awoke something inside me. I should thank her for that now. It’s really the only reason I can connect to someone like the Harbinger. Like Penny.”
Shay Kenyon: “Penny? Her daughter?”
Lena Theras: “She lets you near her daughter?! Idiot.”
Lucifer: “I am actually quite good with children Miss Theras. Which is actually why I am here.”
His eyes shifted to the girl lying on the bed playing with her own toes and Shay could see the veins in her wife's neck beginning to throb. She reached up and slipped a hand into hers, but before she could explode Lucifer said the last thing either of them expected.
Lucifer: “I will not force myself onto them. Or you. If there comes a time you two wish to discuss it then ...we can. But until then? We can all just pretend that your little ...fiction, still stands.”
Lena Theras: “What?”
Her voice came out like a disbelieving hiss.
Lena Theras: “Why would you do that?”
Lucifer: “My mission has always been...”
Lucifer slowly crossed the room until he stood within striking distance of Lena but she didn’t move. She simply stared at him in blank shock. Lucifer reached out and ran a finger along the hair at the back of Jami’s head.
Lucifer: “.....to keep them safe.”
Lena Theras: “You didn’t even know about them!”
Lucifer: “Them. Penny. Her twin sons. Children in general Miss Theras. To keep them safe from the things of this world that wish to prey on them. Somewhere….I forgot that. You two helped awaken something inside me that let Xaria remind me of who I was.”
Lena stared at Lucifer as if he were a live snake, unsure what to make of him while Shay just looked between them trying her best to process what he was saying and how Lena would take it. Lena shifted the girl onto her other side so nothing was between her and Lucifer now, staring at him the whole time.
Lena Theras: “I will never forgive you Lucifer….”
Shay Kenyon: “...Nibz….”
Lena Theras: “...But.”
She looked over at Shay and reached out the hand that she had just been tempted to swing at him and cupped her wife’s face.
Lena Theras: “I’m willing to accept that. For now.”
Lucifer: “Good…”
He gave the smallest little incline of his head and turned to leave when a pair of figures appeared. Ashley Kenyon didn’t so much as look at Lucifer as she walked around him but the blue haired woman behind her inclined her head to him.
Ashley walked into the room glancing over her shoulder and then back to her cousin.
Ashley Kenyon: “Everything good here?”
Shay Kenyon: “Fine Ash…”
Ashley Kenyon: “Good. Look, Maiko is gonna be checking on you for the next couple of days. Maybe a week.”
Lena Theras: “Everything alright?”
Ashley Kenyon: “Yeah, just something I gotta do.”
Maiko leaned in and whispered softly to the woman she called Pool.
Maiko Adachi: “You don’t have to do this….”
Ashley Kenyon: “Yeah…”
She turned and looked at each of the three women in turn one by one.
Ashley Kenyon: “...I do.”
It was never more clear to Ashley what she needed to do. If Lucifer wasn’t going to end this and then she would do it herself at the barrel of a gun.
One way or another, she had a date with Anthony Crawford.
