Or Maybe You'll See Me
Jesse Nucross Backstory 1
Jesse Nucross Backstory 1
“Get the fuck out of my house!” A woman yells from the inside of an old house in a bad neighborhood of Pittsburgh.
The front door swings open and Jesse Nucross is shoved out by an older woman.
“You’re nothing but a worthless fuckin’ son you know that? All you ever do is smoke and fuck strippers and I’ve had it with you!” She throws a full box of cigarettes at Jesse and they fall out from the force and all over the sidewalk.
“Oh yeah? Fuck you then, ma!”
“Don’t you talk to me like that!” She shoves him. He grinds his teeth and doesn’t react but is visibly angry.
“Right, but you can talk to me however you want though? Because you gave birth to me? I don’t give a FUCK!” He screams into her face with some saliva spraying out.
She wipes off her face with a shocked expression. She cocks her arm back and slaps Jesse as hard as she could across the face. Jesse holds his face and begins nodding his head in frustration.
“I hate you so much. Ya know, you’re the reason I am how I am. If you just raised me differently maybe I’d be a more acceptable son, huh?”
“Don’t blame me, Jesse! You’re the one who so badly wanted to run the streets. Well good job! Look at the streets you’re running!”
“I made good money! For you, you ungrateful witch. No one fucks with me here anymore because they know better. They know that crossing the Nucross name is dangerous for their health now. I made my life work with what I was given.”
“Beating up gang members isn’t what you were given in life. I wanted better for you! Then you met that fuckin’ harlot!”
“Don’t even mention her!-”
“Why not? She’s the one who got you into sticking those needles in your arm in the first place. I blame her for everything that went wrong with you.”
Jesse gets very agitated and starts pacing back and forth with his hands on the back of his head.
“I’m clean now, aren’t I?” His mom scoffs at him and gives him a dirty look.
“Clean? All you do is visit that strip joint every night. You’re very far from clean.”
“Ya know what? You’re no fuckin’ saint either, ma. What I do on my own time is and should stay my business. You have no right to judge me for what I do. If I wanna fuck bitches, I’m gonna do that. If I wanna fight to make a living, Imma do that. Imma do everything without you too!”
He spits on the ground while looking at her and turns his back to return to his car.
“Go ahead and run away from me just like your father, you punk!”
He stops dead in his tracks and looks over his shoulder back at her with his fists clenched. He continues to grind his teeth as he turns back around and gets uncomfortably close to his mom with eyes staring directly down at her and his nose twitching.
“Don’t ever call me a punk and don’t ever compare me to him ever again.”
He gets out of her face and walks quickly to his car and slams the door shut. He stares down at the steering wheel waiting to hear the sound of his mom closing the door to her house. He begins slamming his hands on the wheel and screaming. He puts the car in drive and pulls out with his tires squealing.
3 Hours Later
Jesse stands under the neon lights of the strip club sign with his cigarette in between his lips as he stares out into the dark sky that was covered in stars. He exhales a large cloud of smoke with his eyes shut and is interrupted by the sound of a woman's voice.
“Why did I know I’d find you here?”
Jesse opens his eyes and who he sees causes his heart to begin racing, a knot in his stomach, and a ball in his throat. She was the most beautiful woman he’d ever seen.
She was the woman he loved more than anyone in the world-- at one point.
“Are you alright?” She asks concerned which snaps him back out of it and a smirk crawls across his face as he stomps his cigarette out.
“I’m always fine! My health is great and I look amazing. My mood might take a hit sometimes but that doesn’t change how fine I am.”
“That’s very like you, Jess. I’m glad you haven’t changed too much, I always liked that about you.” She leans against the wall next to him.
“Oh yeah? Why’d you leave me then?” He doesn’t look over at her but instead continues staring up at the stars.
“I’ve told you why already. We weren’t healthy with each other. As much as I love you, us being together is always going to be a bad idea.” She turns her head and looks right at Jesse who was now grinding his teeth.
“Yeah… Maybe you’re still right... What’d ya wanna talk to me 'bout anyways?”
“I thought you should know that since I’m clean now, I’m going to be moving out of state real soon. Pittsburgh just isn’t for me now with all these bad memories…”
Jesse finally turns his head to her with a look of disbelief that she’d say that.
“Bad memories, huh?”
“Our time together was special, Jess. Some of the shit we did, was not. I’m gonna miss seeing your face though.”
They stand there in the neon lights in silence. They both watch the stars as Jesse is unable to muster out any words.
“Well, I guess this is it then?” She says to him while getting off the wall and turning to face him one more time.
“Seems that way.” Jesse says with a monotone voice and doesn’t even turn to look at her back. This visibly upsets her as she looks down at her feet before beginning to turn away.
“Maybe I’ll see ya around, Lena. Or maybe you’ll see me.” He smirks at her and she just scoffs with a final smile and walks off, leaving Jesse’s life.
