It was wild how things could change in less than a year and just how majorly they could change in that time. When Marley began feeling sick, she figured it was just her yearly bit of getting sick like she did every year, but when Zara told her to get a test? Well, her cousin had never steered her wrong in the past. She hadn’t told Samuel what was going on, letting him think it was what she had originally thought. Sure, they had discussed a family, but they hadn’t fully decided on when the time would be right. The young woman had been in the bathroom for a little bit, waiting for the timer on her phone to be up. Having been in there and having locked the door so her fiance couldn’t come in to check on her, she knew that she was probably worrying him some, but she wanted to know without him finding out at the same time. Her hopes were up enough, and she didn’t necessarily want to get his up without having to do so.
“It’ll be bad enough for me if this thing is negative. Although I don’t know if a positive will be great either or not…we really should have discussed timing but what’s done is done either way.” Marley was mumbling to herself as she eyed the timer on her phone, her breath catching when the final few seconds passed by. She quickly silenced the timer before it could truly go off and closed her eyes for a moment. Letting out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding in, Marley slowly opened her eyes and cast her gaze down to the pregnancy test that was on the bathroom counter. Her hand flew to her mouth when she saw the positive on the test. “Holy Shit…I hate when she’s right sometimes.” Whether the time was right or not in their minds, there was a higher power that obviously thought they were ready as was the timing. The green-haired woman moved to unlock the bathroom door, finally, then sat down on the edge of the bathtub, suddenly finding herself unable to do much else.
Marley sat there for a couple more minutes before Samuel gently knocked on the door and then walked into the room to check on her, having heard the lock to the door click. She glanced up at him as he walked in, seeing him sign “Are you okay?” to her, but she didn’t respond. Her gaze returned to the counter where she had left the pregnancy test. His gaze followed hers, and he moved to look at the little stick, a look of surprise crossing his face. He knelt so they were face to face, and the gentle smile that had always reassured her and made her feel better was on his face. He reassuringly kissed her forehead, and a little smile crossed her lips when she felt his mustache tickle her skin, a sensation that she felt like she would never get used to, but in a good way. Leaning back to look into her eyes, he signed, “Why didn’t you tell me you thought you might be pregnant?” Marley shrugged a bit and began biting her bottom lip as she thought about it.
“I don’t know…honestly, I thought I was just sick like I get every year. I didn’t even realize I was late until a few days ago when Zara was here and she told me to get a test. I guess…I just didn’t want to say anything unless I was. I mean, I know we talked about having a family, but we never decided when the time would be right.” She paused for a second, taking a deep breath as she moved her head down and began looking into her lap. The young woman was still kind of in shock, and she wasn’t sure if the smile he had given her before was because he could tell she was shocked so he was trying to reassure her or if he was happy about it. “And I don’t know, I guess I didn’t want it to be the wrong time but didn’t want to get your hopes up if we both felt like it was a good time just in case I wasn’t. I figured if the test came back negative, then only my hopes would have been messed with, and it wouldn’t have been that big of a deal. But with it being posi-” Samuel cut Marley off by gently grabbing her chin to make her look at him then softly kissed her.
Marley didn’t open her eyes for a second, even after the kiss ended, deciding to take a deep breath again. She slowly let it out and then opened her eyes to look into his, hers searching for any inclination that he was unhappy with the news. “You’re not upset with the timing…are you?” Her voice was soft as she asked her fiance the question. If he was, she wasn’t sure she really wanted the answer, but at the same time, part of her knew (or at least hoped she knew) that he wouldn’t be since they had talked about it before. “Why would I be upset?” Samuel signed, then paused for a second, a questioning look crossing his face as he looked at her before continuing, “I’ve dreamed about having a family for a long time…to start one with you for a while.” The Filipino woman found herself smiling but there was still a little part of her, in the back of her mind, that was worried…those problematic demons that still enjoyed trying to creep up. She had gotten quite a hold on them over the last 1 and a half-ish years, mostly thanks to Samuel’s help, but she could feel them crawling up from the back of her mind.
The woman’s teeth found their way to her bottom lip again, and she found herself pushing up from the side of the tub without realizing it.”I…I need some air.” Her voice was gentle as she left the bathroom, not bothering to wait to see if anything else was ‘said’. Walking past the kitchen, her stomach growled lightly since they hadn’t had breakfast yet, but she ignored the noise and made her way to the front door, sliding her shoes and jacket on once she reached it. The green-haired woman knew that Samuel wouldn’t be far behind her, but it didn’t matter to her as she pulled the door open and walked into the slightly chilly air. Without thinking of where she was going to go, she found herself walking off of the porch and starting to walk in a random direction. She was paying enough attention to be able to get back to their house, but that was about it, truthfully. She primarily focused on the cool air that was blowing around her, ignoring the few faint sounds that she heard.
Marley’s hands were shoved in her pockets, one hand wrapped tightly around her phone which was constantly vibrating from her receiving text messages. Whether they were from Samuel or even one of her cousins, she wasn’t sure nor did she really find herself caring right at that moment. She found herself in an area like Sylvia's special place but it was a little more open without a large tree to sit underneath but rather a large, tall yet somewhat smooth rock/small boulder that she could climb onto and sit on, something that she did. The surface was chilled with the cool weather, but it didn't seem to phase her as she pulled her knees close to her in order to rest her chin on them. The young woman stared at the empty woods in front of her, a frustrated sigh leaving her lips before she spoke to herself, "Why the fuck did you leave like that? Nothing about what he said was negative so why the fuck did you just walk out like that?" Marley wasn't sure how long she stared at the woods before she groaned and moved her chin, replacing it with her hands that she promptly put her forehead on so she was looking into her lap.
Marley stayed like that for a bit, unsure of how long since she still hadn't looked at her phone despite it still going off like crazy. However, it wasn't much longer until she felt something a little heavier than her own jacket being draped across her shoulders and arms gently wrapping around her the best they could with the way she was sitting. Tightly closing her eyes, she leaned back against Samuel, knowing his touch from anyone's, only for his arms to wrap around her, and her waist, a little tighter and more protectively than usual. "I'm sorry…I shouldn't have left like that." Her words were mumbled, soft…full of apprehension. Giving her a gentle squeeze, he moved to where he was in front of her and signed one simple word, "Demons?" She bit her bottom lip again as she nodded softly, not trusting her voice again. Her fiance frowned a little before he gently guided her off of the rock, into a standing position, then into his arms. They remained that way for a few minutes, Marley holding onto Samuel tightly as if she were trying to ground herself, which she was in a way.
Her eyes had been closed as they held each other, but they opened when she felt him kiss the top of her head like he had done many times before. Pulling away some, he began to sign, "I told you I would always come to find you, no matter where you went." He paused for a moment, looking closely at her before continuing, “Please talk to me, gorgeous. What’s going through your mind?” Marley shrugged a little and looked at the ground though that didn’t last long as Samuel lifted her head by her chin so that she was looking at him again before he simply signed, “Please.” She ran a hand through her hair, grimacing a little when her fingers found a knot that she hadn’t brushed out. “You know how I can sometimes get when they creep up…I don’t always believe that someone is as happy with me, or a situation involving me, as they seem. It’s just how my mind was being…they were just in the back of my mind telling me that the timing wasn’t right, that my being pregnant would mess things up…”
Marley’s voice was soft and faltering as she spoke, not wanting to admit what was floating through her mind but knowing that talking about it was the only way to properly deal with those pesky little demons of hers. “My heart knows that’s not the truth…but my mind doesn’t want to listen…” She sighed softly as she wrapped her arms around her waist as if to protect the developing baby from herself. After all, she was the only negative thing around them at the moment. Samuel carefully placed his hand against her cheek, his thumb slowly stroking the smooth skin that was under it. She leaned into his touch and closed her eyes for a moment before she brought one hand up to place over his. When he moved his hand away, she opened her eyes again, and he began signing, “I understand you’re feeling two different ways about it. But I promise you that our child is not going to mess anything up. We can’t say the timing is right or wrong because we never really discussed it. I want a family with you, Marley…”
Samuel paused, again giving Marley that small smile she loved so much, then continued, “If us having a family is meant to start now then it’s meant to happen now. And I can’t wait to meet him or her.” Marley smiled weakly at her fiance and took in a shaky breath, one hand/arm remaining across her abdomen and her other hand moving to find its way into his. She leaned against him, closing her eyes for a moment though a smile crept to her face as she felt his other hand slide over the jacket she was wearing to rest across her waist, his hand resting next to hers with their fingertips lightly touching each other.
“It’ll be bad enough for me if this thing is negative. Although I don’t know if a positive will be great either or not…we really should have discussed timing but what’s done is done either way.” Marley was mumbling to herself as she eyed the timer on her phone, her breath catching when the final few seconds passed by.
