((This story takes place January 24, 2022))
It’s a beautifully sunny day (a pretty cold one too) in Seoul, South Korea. It’s a bustling metropolitan area as per usual and the area around Samsung Medical Center in Gangnam-gu is no different. A black Audi R8 pulls off the main drag road and into the driveway of the hospital, stopping just outside the main entrance. Both Rei and Jin-soo are wearing black wool coats, playing up the whole matching outfit thing that a lot of Korean couples partake in… but Rei’s was a little different, topping it off with a fluffy (and fuzzy) baby pink scarf. A master of the one hand on the steering wheel technique, Jin-soo’s hand was clasped around Rei’s as they rested on the center console. Rei was smiling from ear to ear as she glanced out the passenger’s side window, watching Seoul fly on by.
Seo Jin-soo: Are you sure you don’t need me to go with you? It’s not easy driving to Incheon.
Rei Park: Oh you just want to drive my uncle’s G-Wagon don’t you?
Seo Jin-soo: Partially yeah… what person who loves cars wouldn’t want to drive a G-Wagon at least once. Besides, G-Wagon’s are pretty big and you’re…
Rei Park: I know I’m smaller than most that drive a vehicle like that. But Samchon entrusted the car to my dad and my dad trusts me. Do you know how much flack I would catch if Samchon got to meet you before my parents?
Both chuckle a little bit as Jin-soo gets out of the driver’s seat, walking around the front of the car to open the passenger’s side door to allow Rei to get out. They stand facing each other, Jin-soo standing in a way to block the wind for Rei. Jin-soo puts his hands on her shoulders and squeezes slightly, a slight smile parting his lips.
Seo Jin-soo: Speaking of parents… mine are wanting to meet you as well. I’m asked all the time when I’m going to bring the person that puts a smile on my face every day home.
Rei Park: Oh stop, you’re making me blush! How about we meet at that cafe and talk about it after I get back from Incheon?
Rei smiles wide as she tucks a section of her hair behind her ear, her eyes squinting ever so slightly to avoid the sunlight. Jin-soo reaches up and brushes a few stragglers away from her eyes, tucking them with the rest of the hair.
Seo Jin-soo: It’s a date then. Call me when you get to the airport so I know you made it safely.
Rei wraps her arms around his waist, the back of his black wool jacket shielding her hands, bending her head back to look up at her boyfriend. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her in closer to him before kissing the top of her forehead.
Rei Park: Jagiya, you don’t have to worry about me… I’ll be fine. Who you should be worried about is the other people on the road because I’m going to be driving a tank.
Jin-soo chuckles before kissing her head again.
Seo Jin-soo: You better get in there to get the keys from your dad before he wonders what happened to you.
Rei Park: He knows you’re bringing me so everything is OK in that aspect. Though you do have a point, he could wander his way out here.
Seo Jin-soo: I better get out of here then.
Jin-soo takes Rei’s face in both of his hands and leans down, their lips pressing together and for both of them, it feels like the world comes to a stop for a few moments. When they part, Rei keeps hold of his hand as she walks towards the hospital’s entrance, only letting go when it got to the point where they had to let go. Once inside, she turns around on the balls of her feet quickly and waves at him with a huge smile on her face. He blows her a kiss before getting back in his car, looking at her through the windows before heading off back into the chaos of Seoul traffic. Rei sighs slightly heavily before heading in the direction of her father’s office.
Upon arrival, she’s greeted by his secretary with a polite bow from both before promptly being shown into the main waiting area. She takes a seat off at the side and starts browsing through a website on her phone, patiently waiting for her dad to come out and give her the keys to the G-Wagon. She had only been sitting there a few minutes when a flustered looking woman in a white nurse’s outfit approached her.
Nurse: Are you here to see Doctor Park?
Rei Park: Yeah I’m waiting to see him. But I don’t think I’m waiting to see him in the way that you think that I am.
Nurse: If you’re not here for a consultation appointment, I’m going to have to ask you to leave. We need these seats for patients and it’s looking like the doctor might have to have to head into an emergency surgery so we’re a bit busy if you can’t tell.
Rei Park: I’m sorry, but I don’t quite like the tone you’re carrying on with right now. If you knew who I was, you wouldn’t be speaking like that.
Nurse: Look, I don’t care who you are. But you can’t take up the seats we need. Please… leave.
Rei gets angered and quickly stands up, dropping her luxury handbag into the chair so hard the chain shoulder strap makes a loud “CLANG” upon it. But before she has the chance to pop off and tell this nurse what’s what, her father’s secretary comes rushing in and stands between the two ladies, using his arm to create a blockade.
Secretary: This is not the time nor the place for what looks like is about to happen. Miss Park, I’m sorry for how our nurse has treated you. It was highly disrespectful and she will be reprimanded.
Nurse: Pfft. I’m not scared of some half rate mistress.
Rei Park: I’M SORRY WHAT?!
Secretary: Nurse Jeong! That is enough!
The secretary straightens out his navy blazer, turning to face her directly like he’s doing drill in the military. He looks her dead in the eyes and the nurse just stands there like a deer caught in the headlights. And by now, everyone in the waiting room was watching.
Secretary: Miss Park is the daughter of Doctor Park… not the mistress. Doctor Park and his wife have been married for almost 3 decades and are deeply in love, which I’m sure Reika here can vouch for. If he knew the way you were speaking to his daughter right now, you’d promptly be fired. I will personally not be telling the doctor of this occurrence, but if Miss Park chooses to, I’m sorry but I can’t help you then. You don’t own these seats… the hospital does. Now go back to what it is you’re supposed to be doing and don’t ever let me see you bother Miss Park or anyone else in this matter again.
Defeated, the nurse quickly leaves as the murmurs of conversations start to buzz throughout the waiting room. The secretary turns to face Rei who has since picked up her purse and slung it back over her shoulder.
Secretary: I’ll go get your dad. Again, I’m sorry for Nurse Jeong.
Rei just shrugged it off with a sigh, the secretary nodding and smiling at her before heading into the back areas of the office. When he returns a few moments later, he’s accompanied by Rei’s dad, Doctor Park Dae-won. Reaching into the pocket of his white lab coat, Dae-won pulls out the keys to his brother’s G-Wagon so that Rei can pick him up at the airport.
Park Dae-won: What was all that ruckus going on out here?
Rei Park: I don’t really want to talk about it. Just someone being a raging bitch to someone who can be an even bigger one.
Park Dae-won: I’m sure Secretary Lee will be filling me in before the end of business. I wish I could stick around and talk longer, but I have to go check on a patient.
Rei Park: It’s OK. I really need to be getting on the road anyway.
Park Dae-won: I’ll walk you to the elevator.
The father and daughter duo head for the elevators and Rei fills her dad in on the topic that her and Jin-soo are finally going to talk about the whole “meeting the parents” topic. This seemed to make the doctor happy and when the elevator dings, he ushers his daughter in. Rei presses the button for the underground parking and waves goodbye to her father with yet another smile upon her face. Much like Jin-soo, Rei’s dad tells her to let him know when she gets to the airport in Incheon.
Approximately 90 minutes later, that is just where Rei arrives, parking in the short-term parking lot before heading for the arrivals area of terminal 2. Checking her phone, Rei sees that she still has some time until her uncle should be walking through the doors and decides to get herself (and him as well) a Starbucks on the third floor. She procures the coffees but then finds herself rushing back because she got a text alert saying that the flight landed 20 minutes earlier than expected and he would be coming through arrival hall B.
Pushing her way to the front, she seems a tad out of breath (you would be too if you booked it across an airport in heels) as she takes a sip of her iced latte, patiently waiting for the doors to open. When they do, a flood of people walk through and Rei fights to see her uncle as people rush their waiting loved ones. Slowly people start to walk away and it was then that a 6 foot tall, modelesque man with perfectly coiffed jet black hair struts through the door like it was the catwalk at New York Fashion Week.
Rei Park: SAMCHON!
Rei starts waving wildly, catching her uncle’s attention quickly. When he makes it over to Rei, she has the already purchased coffee for him thrust out in front of her. His eyes light up like a kid on Christmas Day before grabbing it and taking a long sip.
Park Dae-sung: Ah! I needed that.
He then looks at her with a bit of confusion.
Park Dae-sung: I thought your dad was coming.
Rei Park: You know how he is… work, work, work. But, I had the time to meet you out here.
Park Dae-sung: I’m surprised the twins didn’t come out here with you. You guys have been practically inseparable.
Rei Park: Nam-ji is working on some new gear for me and she’s in the “don’t disrupt me or I’ll shove a chopstick into your liver” stage. And Joo-kyun is off doing… whatever it is that he does during the day.
Park Dae-sung: So you came out here all by yourself… and driving my car nonetheless. How’d you do it… you’re so little?
Rei Park: I pulled the seat up as much as I could.
Rei chuckles as the two walk towards the exit, both sipping on their respective coffees. Once they reach the parking lot, Rei tosses the G-Wagon’s keys back to their owner and they load up Dae-sung’s luggage before clambering into the front seats and heading off towards Seoul.
Park Dae-sung: So… how’s the wrestling working out for you? I tried to catch shows when I could but I do watch your matches on YouTube. You’re my favorite wrestler.
Rei Park: And you’re biased as hell.
Park Dae-sung: Of course! You’re my niece. Though that Jenn Drew you’ve aligned yourself with is pretty impressive as well. How’d you come up with the name Seoul Queens?
Rei Park: Seoul is from me and Queen is from her cause she’s British. And yeah… she’s pretty damn impressive being the one who dethroned Arley Kirk and all. I was glad to see Arley’s reign finally come to an end because it was starting to get boring as hell. I just wish that people would stop trying to plant seeds of disdain between us.
Park Dae-sung: Well you know what Eomma would say…
BOTH: FUCK THEM!
They both burst out laughing because eomma/halmeoni hardly ever curses but is very adamant about something when she uses that phrase.
Park Dae-sung: Regardless of what others say, as long as you’re staying true to yourself… that’s all that matters.
Rei Park: So that’s why you’re still single at 40?
Park Dae-sung: Ouch! But to answer your question… partially why I stayed single until now. Though I’m sure I’ll be set up on blind dates in a few days time.
Rei Park: They’re actually not that bad. She sent me out on a few when I came back to Seoul too and look at me now… I have Jin-soo.
Park Dae-sung: So when do we get to meet him?
Rei Park: My dad is asking the same thing. We just decided that it was time to approach that topic because we both have grandparents pushing for our marriage with the whole “it’s that time for you” argument.
Park Dae-sung: I’ve been getting that topic thrown at me for almost 20 years… from the moment I was discharged after my military service. And while I’ve dated… none were serious enough. But I think it’s finally time to settle down. I’m sure my brothers are taking bets.
Rei Park: The bet is what age you’ll get married at. If you got married tomorrow my dad would win. Just as long as you get married before January 1st anyway.
Park Dae-sung: Good to know.
A chuckle escapes from Rei’s uncle’s mouth as he navigates the roads on his way back to Seoul. When they reach the city limits, they hit a bit of traffic that looks like it’s at a stand still. Rei swiftly retrieves her phone from her purse and fires off a text to Jin-soo to see when they should meet at the cafe.
Park Dae-sung: So where am I dropping you off? Gangnam?
Rei Park: Not quite sure. Just waiting on a reply and I will let you know. Doesn’t look like we’re moving anyway.
Park Dae-sung: Just my luck. I always seem to hit traffic coming from Incheon.
Simultaneously both of them lift their Starbucks cups from the cupholders and take the last few sips of caffeinated goodness into their mouths. After a few minutes, traffic starts to move slowly as Rei gets a notification on her phone. It’s a reply from Jin-soo saying that he was gonna have dinner with some colleagues in Seocho near the office and to meet him there. Dae-sung tries to peek over to see the text but gets shut out by Rei who gives him a death glare.
Rei Park: Jugeullae?
Park Dae-sung: Hey! That’s not something you should say to an elder.
Rei Park: Physically yes you are an elder. But are you really?
They both laugh as traffic picks up the pace, the pair noticing a tow truck with a pretty smashed car on its flatbed.
Park Dae-sung: So… any update on where I’m dropping you off?
Rei Park: Yeah… Seocho. He invited me to dinner with some of his work friends so he’ll be waiting for me outside. And before you ask, no… you’re not going to drop me off right out front to try and sneak a peek.
A chuckle escapes from his lips.
Park Dae-sung: Arasseo, arasseo.
Eventually, they arrive in Seocho and Rei guides him in the direction of the restaurant where she would be meeting Jin-soo. And as per her wishes (more like demands honestly), Park Dae-sung drops his niece off a block away from the restaurant. He carefully watched as she approached the corner, disappearing in the crowd as the scene came to an end.
