We open onto the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul in the Jongno-gu district on what is a somewhat blustery night. The sky is dark and littered with clouds and fluffy white flakes of snow fall from said sky as a sleek black Mercedes AMG CLS pulls up to the valet area at the hotel’s entrance. A dashingly dressed man in his mid 50s gets out of the driver’s seat, adjusting his black wool jacket before handing off the keys to the approaching valet. He then scurries around to the passenger’s side of the vehicle before opening the door, revealing former Pride of 1WM Champion, Rei Park. Rei was all smiles as she got out of the car, herself dressed to the nines in her signature Chanel. She hooked her arm in the arm of the older gentleman and the two headed into the hotel, seeking solace from the chill of the outside atmosphere. The heels of Rei’s shoes click against the tiled floor as the pair head across the lobby in the direction of the elevators.
Rei Park: Appa, why did you want to take me to dinner all of the sudden? My birthday isn’t for another few weeks.
Park Dae-won: Does a father need an excuse to dote on his favorite daughter.
Rei Park: I’m your only daughter… and your only child for that matter.
Park Dae-won: Well to answer your question, with your mother in Tokyo helping out with the family business there, I was a bit restless sitting at home. I thought that when you decided to move back to Seoul that you’d move back into the family home… not in with Nam-ji and Joo-kyun.
Rei Park: Appa… I’m almost 30 years old and while I am a dutiful daughter most of the time, my own space to grow was nice when you guys left New York.
Park Dae-won: You mean when you spontaneously moved to Miami and shacked up with that personal trainer.
Rei Park: I did not “shack up” with him. I had my own place… I was just over at his place or he was over at mine for most of our relationship. That was a whirlwind thing that came and went. But we grew apart and I decided to come home.
Park Dae-won: You’ve lived in a few different cities in your life but you’ve always considered Seoul to be home.
Rei Park: Well Miami definitely wasn’t it and New York is too big to be there by myself. What I didn’t expect when I came home was to be immediately thrust into blind dates.
Park Dae-won: That is halmeoni for you. Heck, if I hadn’t married your mother out of nowhere, she’d have done the same to me… and your uncles. Speaking of those blind dates, when are your mother and I going to meet this Seo Jin-soo you’re always ranting and raving about?
Before Rei has a chance to respond, the elevator that she pressed the button for during the conversation arrives and they (along with a few others) enter the elevator. They keep the conversation paused until they exit the elevator and are seated at a table by the window of the Italian restaurant inside of the Four Seasons, Boccalino.
Park Dae-won: So… are you going to answer my question?
Rei Park: Appa, you know that when it comes to introducing a boyfriend or girlfriend to the family that usually marriage isn’t far behind. I can tell you right now… that is not something I am ready for just yet. I have my career to think about. I have modeling gigs, wrestling shows for two companies… I’m too busy right now.
Park Dae-won: Your mom and I…
Rei Park: You guys also did things a lot faster because mamasan had to go back to Japan. Things went too fast in my last relationship… I don’t want that to happen with this one. I really like Jin-soo. Heck, he went with me to the Bahamas and LA shows when he was so busy with work. He’s also not intimidated by me wrestling. So that has to say something.
Park Dae-won: Well… that’s a good sign then. But since I’m not allowed to meet him just yet… you have to at least tell us a little bit more about him other than that his name is Seo Jin-soo and that he’s the grandson of one of halmeoni’s friends.
Rei Park: He’s the second son of the VP of halmeoni’s company for starters.
Park Dae-won: Oh so he’s Mr. Seo’s son. Ahh, I haven’t seen either of the boys in many years so in my mind they’re still little kids. You guys used to go to the same after school care when we lived in Seoul.
Rei Park: I know… we’ve gotten the pic out of his mom a couple weeks ago.
Park Dae-won: So you’ve met his parents but he’s not met yours?
Rei Park: No, no no… we’ve not gotten to that part yet. He merely mentioned that his mom said that and then I asked for the picture. But to cover the basics, he’s a second son as you know, he works as a producer for an entertainment company in Seocho. And before you ask, no I won’t tell you which company it is for his privacy and the artists he works with. He knows I’m the daughter, well only child, of the second son and somewhere in the line of succession for halmeoni’s position someday.
Park Dae-won: Given that neither of your twin cousins want the spot, I highly suspect that you will be named the heir given that my younger brother still doesn’t have any kids of his own.
Rei rolls her eyes as one of the employees pours them each a glass of red wine. Grabbing it without a moment’s hesitation, Rei rolls her eyes and takes a sip.
Park Dae-won: I know it’s not what you want, but you can’t be a wrestler and model forever. Besides, it would be a shame for that NYU business degree to go to waste.
Rei Park: Don’t forget that Joo-kyun also has a business degree.
Park Dae-won: Did you not hear when I said that neither of the twins want it.
Rei Park: I did… I was merely reminding you that I’m not the only in the family who graduated college with a business degree. Besides, I think samchon has that spot as the current CEO. He keeps telling me to just say the word and he’ll put me in a position to rise up through the ranks quickly.
Park Dae-won: Well you don’t expect to be named the heir without working for it do you?
Rei Park: My name is not Yoo Deok-hwa. I’m not an entitled chaebol.
Park Dae-won: I’m glad though that it’s not fully off your list and that it seems to be sitting on your back burner. The company has always been in the family and I think it should stay that way.
Rei Park: I’ve never been one to disappoint my grandmother and I don’t think that is going to be starting anytime soon if at all.
Dae-won makes a gesture and soon a waiter comes over carrying a tray with two champagne flutes upon it as another is carrying an ice bucket with a bottle of champagne sitting snugly inside of it. Rei looks a bit puzzled as she finishes off her wine in one really big mouthful.
Rei Park: What’s this all about?
Park Dae-won: You won your match at 1WM’s MASSIVE anniversary show did you not?
Rei Park: Yeah… but I don’t really think that it warrants champagne. It wasn’t like it was for a title or something. I’m working my way back to that and it won’t be long until there’s a championship title around my waist once again.
Park Dae-won: This is to make up for your mom and I not being able to celebrate your original title win. This is also to wish you luck with your new company NFW as well.
Rei Park: Appa… this is still a little too much.
The cork goes “POP” and the wait staff starts filling the glasses as Rei looks over the menu, her dad shaking his head with a slight laugh escaping from his mouth. The wait staff then bow and leave the tableside.
Park Dae-won: You are my only daughter… my only child… the heiress to everything your mother and I own… I’m going to spoil you because that’s what I’ve always done. Besides, I need to make up for your mom and I not being there through the beginning of your career when you needed us. Maybe that’s why you went to Miami.
Rei Park: While going to Miami might be a dark spot in your eyes, I don’t regret anything about it. It made me into the person that I am today and I’m thankful for the experience. It made me really think about things and what I want out of life. Besides, I get a little bit of income from renting out that apartment and the tenant is really nice.
Park Dae-won: You know halmeoni will buy you a building if you really want it.
Rei Park: Did you forget what she gave me for my 25th birthday 2 years ago? Hell, she even gave one to each of the twins too.
There was a brief silence before the pair started giggling together as Dae-won waves over the waiter. The waiter listens carefully to the orders placed by the father and daughter duo before quickly scurrying away to tell the kitchen staff. The pair continue to drink and talk about a wide variety of subjects, and when their dinner arrives, Rei instantly starts digging into her wagyu beef bolognese, her eyes rolling back in her head the moment the pasta touches her tongue.
Rei Park: My god this is good. Easily the top five pastas I’ve ever had. Though, the best pasta is to be had in Italy. When I was there back in the summer during the tour, I must’ve eaten my weight in pizza and pasta.
Park Dae-won: It’s been quite a number of years since I’ve been to Italy. Maybe once things calm down for your mother and I, I can take her to Europe for a couple of weeks.
Rei Park: The great Doctor Park taking a break? Who’d have ever thought that was possible.
Park Dae-won: It takes a lot running the department of a hospital and working at halmeoni’s company on the side. Oh I almost forgot to tell you, Dae-sung is returning to Seoul next week.
Rei Park: Samchon?! It’s been like 3 years since I’ve gotten to see him.
Park Dae-won: Would you be able to pick him up at Incheon Airport? I’ll even give you the Range Rover cause I know he’ll probably have a lot of luggage.
Rei Park: Give me the keys to the G-Wagon and we’ll call it a deal.
Park Dae-won: The G-Wagon is Dae-sung’s… not mine to let you drive. I promised I would keep it safe for him until he came back.
Rei Park: Then doesn’t it make sense for me to drive it out there to pick him up and let him drive it back that way he only has to drop me off before heading home.
Dae-won makes a gesture with his hand as to say that she was right and the two continue to eat their meal. The scene slowly started to pan away as it faded out to black.
