The scene opens to Nakajima Park in Sapporo, Japan as we see Damon Cross, Danni Debaillion, Leina Rael-Debaillion, Ronnie Lester, and Una Quinn looking around in various different directions, all of them trying to find Sylvia Lopez. Damon is throwing all his focus into this, almost stalking around as he tries to find their fellow Crusader. In part because he is concerned, but in part because if he stops for a moment, he’ll turn on his heel and hunt down that toerag Johnny Towers.
Una Quinn: I’m sure we’re all keen to find her, but where do we begin?
Ronnie glances around the park.
Ronnie Lester: Find the biggest tree you can. She loves this particular one right behind the house back home. It makes her feel safe. We find the tree, we’ll find her sittin’ underneath it rockin’ herself, tryin’ to calm herself down.
Damon Cross: Ronnie would know. Let’s just be thankful that we’re not anywhere near Aokigahara.
The suicide forest… yes, that would make this more challenging in ways that are best not to be considered. Danni stays close to Damon, but Leina is under no such compunction. She wants to find Aunt Sylvia more than just about anyone else.
Leina Rael-Debaillion: I can’t believe that asshole did that to her! Just because he doesn’t like you, Pops! Hell is that?!
Danielle looks like she wants to correct her daughter, but now does not seem to be the time. She sticks by Damon’s side, looking where he does not, splitting their attention.
Una Quinn: What about that one there?
She points at a particularly large one. Ronnie nods quickly.
Ronnie Lester: That’s a good possibility. That one and that one off to the left look just like the ones back home. I mean, as close as you can to Carolina here…
Damon Cross: Just reminds me of how much I’ve come to love peace and quiet and solitude. I’ll always love Japan for the culture and the food, but there’s too many people…
The lot of them split up, each heading for one of the massive trees. Ronnie and Una go to the right, Damon and Danni head to the left with Leina right behind them. As they come to the two trees, a third catches Leina's eye and she hurries off towards it.
Ronnie Lester: Y’all find anything over there?
Damon Cross: Nothing here… anything, Li?
Darting over to the third tree, Leina peers around and… finds a rocking, tense Sylvia sitting there, just as Ronnie figured she might be. She looks up at the young girl who, without much in the way of worry, drops down and hugs the Banshee. It is not the sort of affection Sylvia is used to, but for once she is not averse to it. Not this time.
Leina Rael-Debaillion: Auntie Syl!
Sylvia Lopez: Leina?! What are you... doing here?!
Leina Rael-Debaillion: Looking for you!
Sylvia Lopez: By yourself?! You shouldn’t be out here alone! Even if you are looking for Sylvia!
Damon Cross: She isn’t.
Eventually, the lot of them come around from both sides of the tree. Damon takes a knee next to his friend, gently putting a hand on her shoulder.
Damon Cross: I’m afraid this is on me, Sylvia. Towers is taking the coward’s route trying to get at me, going at you and Ronnie. But he’s going to be put down like an animal.
Lopez looks to the floor, almost looking guilty before her eyes meet Cross’ again.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia doesn’t blame you, Damon! Sylvia didn’t like what Towers was saying about you! Sylvia wanted to make him pay! And… Sylvia failed!
The Bellevue Banshee suddenly grabs the sides of her head and begins to shake it, not a good thing considering her neck injury is still unknown.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia hears her voice again! Sylvia wants it to stop! SYLVIA WANTS IT TO STOP!
Ronnie kneels on the other side and puts his hands on either side of her face.
Ronnie Lester: Timber… it’s alright… y’all with your family. Eliza’s even been makin’ my phone go apeshit. Don’t y’all worry, we ain’t gonna make you go back there to them doctors or nothin’. We’ve got you and you ain’t failed a damn thing! Ok, so he smacked ya a little. That’s cause he didn’t tell Timber what game they were playing before they started playing. If he’d told Timber what the game was, she would have known the rules and been lookin’ for him to do things like that. Now you know and next time, play time won’t be like that. That’s Timber’s kind of game and he don’t know what it looks like when you dangle things in front of a wolf like that…
Normally that sort of talk would get Lopez all excited, but she barely responds as she lifts up the sleeve of her hospital gown and scratches at her forearm which already appears to be sore, indicating that she’s been doing it for a while.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia failed! Sylvia failed! Sylvia deserves to be punished!
Una Quinn: Why does Sylvia deserve to be punished?
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia is supposed to protect her family! Sylvia failed to do that! That’s why!
Damon Cross: No, she does not. If anyone has earned some pain, it’s me. But instead, I’m going to take all of this out on Johnny Towers. And when he’s dealt with, Tren Descarrilado is next.
As Lopez seems to finally begin to calm down by being around her family, the pain in her neck and other parts of her body become apparent to the Bellevue Banshee.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia hurts! Sylvia is in pain!
Leina’s eyes widen. Everything Sylvia has suffered has finally risen to the surface. Before she can say or do anything, however, she sees her mother kneel down before her.
Danni Debaillion: Sylvia, look at me.
She reaches out with small hands and gently places them on the sides of Sylvia’s head. Danni’s fingers softly caress her hair and she offers a sweet, caring smile.
Danni Debaillion: We’re going back with you, okay? Everything is going to be alright. Shhh… Don’t be afraid. We’re with you.
Lopez shakes her head.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia can’t go back! She is there! Sylvia can hear her! She’s trying to take over again!
It takes a moment, but the Semper Fairy has an idea of who Sylvia is talking about. Danni makes sure that their eye contact is not broken.
Danni Debaillion: Dolores is never coming back, Sylvia. You won’t let her. We won’t let her.
Fear washes over the face of the Bellevue Banshee’s face when Danni mentions her name and she begins to shake slightly, as if she were cold.
Sylvia Lopez: How do you know?! What if Sylvia isn’t strong enough to stop her?!
Una Quinn: Because Sylvia has this lot now. She has something she did not have before. She has family. She does not need to go it alone.
Damon Cross: Exactly.
Right there next to Danni, Damon helps Sylvia gradually to her feet.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia is tired!
The Bellevue Banshee appears to be just that as her eyes become heavy, likely because of all the pain and mental stress she’s been dealing with over the past couple of days. She almost passes out, but Lester is quick to make sure she doesn’t collapse.
Ronnie Lester: We got you, Timber. Your family has you.
Sylvia Lopez: Sylvia is… sorry… Sylvia didn’t want to… worry her family…
Ronnie Lester: Ain’t nothin’ to be sorry for, Timber. We love you!
Una Quinn: Too right!
Damon Cross: Exactly.
Leina Rael-Debaillion: We’ve got you, Auntie Syl!
There’s a brief moment where honest concern wears on Danielle’s face. She noticed Sylvia’s reaction after the mention of Dolores’ name.
‘I… I said something wrong, didn’t I…?’ She mentally questions. A frown crosses her face and she rises to her feet, her right hand coming over her left arm just above the elbow.
Sylvia Lopez: Can Sylvia read her book after she’s had some rest?!
Everyone with the Bellevue Banshee share a concerned look with one another, knowing that Lopez’s book, her treasured copy of Dante’s Inferno has been stolen, most likely by Towers, and Sylvia still doesn’t know the truth about that yet.
Damon Cross: Let’s worry about dinner and rest first.
Lopez lightly nods, too exhausted to protest which allows the rest of the group to breathe a sigh of relief as they all make their way back to the subway to return to where they’re staying as the scene fades.
Una Quinn: I’m sure we’re all keen to find her, but where do we begin?
